Machines Masterclass: TR-808

51 tracks4 h 16 min

Released in 1980, the TR-808 flopped at first: it didn't sound like a real drum kit. That turned out to be the whole point. Sold off cheap on the second-hand market, it found its way into electro, hip-hop, Chicago house, Miami bass, and later trap.

This playlist follows the machine from one genre to the next, from Marvin Gaye to Cardi B by way of Afrika Bambaataa, The Egyptian Lover, Three 6 Mafia and Aphex Twin. No chronological order — just that long kick, the dry clap and the cowbell, track after track.
